My first experience of Anthony Steen MP was back in 1973 when I went to the Liverpool Blue Coat School, and he became Conservative MP for Wavertree. The Conservative Club, which was next door to the school, had a large poster saying "Vote Anthony Steen, Conservative" taking up most of its front wall. Our headmaster actually asked boys to stop wearing "Vote Labour" badges because of "the embarrassment to our neighbours".
Now, thirty-six years on, Anthony Steen is MP for Totnes in Devon, and is standing down because of the MP's expenses scandal. MPs of all parties have been ripping off the hard-working public for years, so why single out Anthony Steen?
Well he has been the only one daft enough to rant on BBC Radio Four about it. After claiming £87,729 of our money to spend on his mansion, he still fails to understand that, as a Member of Parliament, he is supposed to represent the people, not spend their hard-earned cash on his own luxuries.
Sulking like a child whose favourite toy has been confiscated for bad behaviour, his arrogance is absolutely breathtaking.
Here are some quotes from his rant:
Immoral, more like!
"And do you know what it's about? Jealousy! I've got a very, very large house. Some people say it looks like Balmoral."
"It does me nicely, and it's got room to actually plant a few trees."
As far as I'm concerned, and as of this day, I don't know what the fuss is about."
I took soundings from the constituents.... they are absolutely beside themselves with anger."
"We have a wretched government here, which has completely mucked up the system and caused resignation of me and many others, 'cos it was this government that introduced the Freedom of Information Act."
"What right does the public have to interfere with my private life? None!"

I am God.
(Psalm 46: 10)
He says it's got room to plant a few trees. He's planted FIVE HUNDRED trees. That's not a garden, it's a forest! Then he claimed £459 for a woodland consultant to stop the rabbits eating them!
He spent £597.14 on lights! Presumably this is to illuminate the garden so he doesn't keep bumping into his trees.
The constituents are "absolutely beside themselves with anger". And they have every right to be, but he doesn't seem to be able to grasp that they are actually angry with him!
And what right does the public have to interfere with his private life? If you're reading this, Anthony Steen, it's because the public have financed your lavish lifestyle with their hard-earned wages. Some of your constituents struggle to buy a single light bulb, and as for owning five hundred trees.....
My message to Anthony Steen and all the other grabbing leeches in Parliament, is resign now, and go a long, long way away.
But the problem is, they will only be replaced by more MPs, of exactly the same ilk.
It's almost unbelievable how anyone could be so arrogant and out-of-touch with the real world. What a prat!
I tried to send him a message via his website but, guess what? The URL is "temporarily unavailable". The coward has taken his website off-line. But David Cameron (his boss) made him apologise for his rant the next day.
Here is an aerial view of Anthony Steen's "very very large house," purchased with OUR money. Now I live in a "very very small house," and own two rose bushes. I recently spent 99p on lights and we take it in turns to sit in the garden all night in case rabbits start nibbling the rose bushes!
Please note - not a rabbit in sight! £459 of our money well-spent!
