MY ANCESTORS

This page contains photographs (click on each one to see it clearly) of some of my ancestors, all of whom are now deceased. They are nearly all from my father's side of the family - sadly my mother's relatives took very few photographs. Most of the pictures feature members of the Robinson line from Halewood, near Liverpool.

Picture 1 (c1860):  My great-great-grandmother's sister Dora and her husband, Francis Ellinson at the thatched cottage by the Lodge on Lydiate Lane, Halewood.

Picture 2 (c1860):  My great-great-grandmother and great-great-grandfather (Robinson).

Picture 3 (c1880): Unfortunately the identities of these people have been lost in the mists of time, but the writing on the back of the print informs us that the scene is Suttons Lane, Halewood.

Picture 4 (1890): My great-grandfather Daniel Robinson and great-grandmother Elizabeth (nee Walton).

Picture 5 (1894): My great-great-grandfather Daniel Robinson and his son (my great uncle), who was also called Daniel.

Picture 6 (1898):  Halewood School. My great uncle Dan is bottom right.

Picture 7 (1902):  The little boy is my grandfather John Thomas Salmon. The building in the background is St Hilda's Church, Hunts Cross.

Picture 8 (July 1917):  Captain F Jolland's Squad of the Coldstream Guards. My great Uncle Dan is on the extreme right of the second row down. These men were shortly to see action in France, during the First World War.

Picture 9 (1917):  My great Uncle Dan in Coldstream Guards Uniform

Picture 10 (1917):  The War Grave of my paternal grandfather's brother Frank Salmon (1885-1917) in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. My son, Thomas, visited this grave on a school trip in 1999.

Picture 11 (1919): The Liverpool City Police. My great Uncle Dan is again at the extreme right of the second row down. Soon after this picture was taken he was dismissed, along with most of the Force, for taking part in the Police strike of 1919, which saw the Army take control of the streets of Liverpool.

Picture 12 (c1920): My Grandmother, Florence, and her mother, Elizabeth, outside the Robinson family home, "The Hollies" in Church Road, Halewood (near Gerrard's Lane). This house was owned by the Robinsons since being built around 1865, until it was demolished in 1967. It was compulsorily purchased from my great Uncle Dan, and the area cleared for industrial development, which never happened. Uncle Dan, who had known no other home, died broken-hearted, living in a small council flat less than two years later. The site stood empty until 1991 when new houses were built on it!

Picture 13 (1924): The wedding of my paternal grandparents, John Thomas Salmon and Florence Robinson.

Picture 14 (1929): My father's sister, Dorothy, at the age of 6 months. Sadly, she died before reaching her third birthday.

Picture 15 (c1930): My great-grandparents, Daniel and Elizabeth Robinson behind the house in Church Road.

Picture 16 (9 September 1950): My parents' (Kenneth Edwin Salmon and Anne "Nancy" Douglas) wedding.

Picture 17 (1953): My great Uncle Dan was 61 years old when he finally married Nellie Ellis. They had been seeing each other for over 30 years!

Picture 18 (c1955): My maternal grandmother, Catherine Wright (formerly Douglas, nee Cullen). She died in 1976 at the age of 72 years and 35 days. By an amazing coincidence, when my father died in 1996 he was 72 years and 35 days old!
