THORNHILL
The place where I live
Thornhill is a suburb of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, having lost its status as a village in 1910. It lies a couple of miles south of Dewsbury Town Centre, about half way to Horbury Bridge.
Its history can be traced back to early settlements in the 9th century, and it is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1893 an explosion below ground claimed the lives of 139 miners in the Combs Pit. In 1947 this mine combined with the nearby Ingham Pit to form the Thornhill Colliery, which finally closed in 1971. A few miles down the road, near Grange Moor, the Caphouse Colliery continued to work until the miners' strike of 1985, which saw an end to mining in the area.
Now a mainly residential area, there are many cottages dating back to Victorian times, alongside large council estates built in the 1950's and more modern developments. Overthorpe Park is home to the Thornhill Trojans RLFC who play in the Premier Division of the National Conference League.
